That First Kiss - J. C Valentine, Feature & Giveaway

 Blurb
Mercurial and charming, Tate Larson is a rising author and playboy who has a different woman on his arm every night of the week. Focused on his work, Tate has no plans to settle down any time soon. That is until he meets his pretty new assistant, Piper Donovan. Desperate to escape the promise of backwater living, Piper ditched her Alabama hometown and never looked back. That was almost two years ago. Now that she is out of a job and her bank account is running on fumes, she’s desperate to find a job, fast. She finds the break she is searching for when she lands a position at Bookish Temptations. A little dancing and a lot of drinks with the girls seem the perfect way to celebrate. After a brief but explosive encounter with a man she was never supposed to see again turns out to be the same man she will be bending over backwards to please, her every instinct tells her to run. But when running means leaving the life she has struggled so hard to create, Piper decides her only option is to continue working for the devastatingly sexy Tate Larson...even if it kills her. Unable to deny their growing attraction, they struggle to keep their distance in a relationship that requires anything but.

Fire - Heather James (*)

Genre; Paranormal
Release Date; January 5th 2013
Synopsis

Is control over the elements a gift, or a curse?

Roxy thinks that she is in control of everything: with flames flaring at her fingertips and an equally fiery attitude, what more could she need? But then she meets Brae, a prince from a rival Realm, who turns her assumptions of superiority upside down.

Jasmine has none of Roxy’s confidence or intensity. But she does have a secret - and Brae - and she’s not going to give either up willingly
Review
Firstly, this genre is one i wouldn't usually delve into, but i gave it a chance and it paid off. So, the story begins with an epic descriptive opening (i love good descripition) and whilst i wasn't really sure what the heck was happening, it was fast paced and i wanted to know. I found once i got into the story, the introduction of all the Realms through me for a while, and i was glad i kept notes. This book tells the story of three main characters, but told from the eyes of two. Jasmine & Roxy. Bascially, the fire realm is holding a summit to bring together all the other realms and offer peace...or so it seems. I found this book took me a while because as a non fantasy reader it was alot to digest. I found talking about it with Scott made it easier though, and i am glad i stuck at it to the very end, because overall - its a great book, if you are into fanatasy then this could be one to pick up.

Cover Art Reveal - The Students Told Us Secrets.

This shocking and at times completely insane collection of short stories will have you wanting more! It includes twelve chilling short stories, all set in Shanghai China! Based on the extrememly selfish and at times megalomaniac like tendencies of your average Chinese "one child policy" kid in Shanghai. You'll be amazed at what these kids do to get what they want!

This, is so my not usual thing, but since joinging the world of book blogging - i have being stepping out of my comfy chick lit world and into that of wider genres. This book intrigues me, the reviews sound interesting. It tells the story of 12 children in China, some dark & disturbing stories, i guess its time i stepped out my happy bubble and into one of danger!

This book will be avaliable in June - see more here

Love Unscripted - Tina Reber(*)

Genre; Romance/Contemporary
Release date; March 6th 2010
Synopsis
Ryan Christensen just wanted to be an actor. Never in his wildest dreams did he ever think that accepting a role in an unknown film would toss his career into overdrive. His new fame has cost him dearly; anonymity is no longer an option. His fans stalk him, the paparazzi hound him, and Hollywood studios all want a piece of him. Despite all of that, Ryan Christensen craves the most basic of human needs - to have love in his heart and privacy in his life.

Taryn Mitchell, the story's protagonist, is a realist. She's been feigning contentment, running the family pub in Seaport, Rhode Island, while quietly nursing her own internal heartaches. Her feet are fairly glued to the ground and she doesn't buy into all the hype that has descended on her tiny, coastal town. In her world, men are safe if they're kept at a distance.

Fate has other plans for these two when their paths cross one sunny afternoon. A group of female fans has attacked him, leaving his shirt torn, his face cut, and Ryan in obvious distress. Bonds between them form from the most dramatic of circumstances while jealousy, insecurity, and the stress of his celebrity life try to tear them apart.

Through all the tabloid lies, secrecy, and pressure, can Taryn's peace and Ryan's high-profile insanity live together in harmony
Review
This was long, very long. I felt like i spent hours reading to hardly make a dent in it. However, i enjoyed it. It was a refreshing change, when i heard about this, i thought it was another girl falls for a movie star and that's that. Oh no, Taryn and Ryans relationship is full of drama. I mean full of it, however, they tackle it head on and its not just skirted around like other novels. I was a fan of Taryn from start to finish, a strong independent woman through and through, and i am glad the author left her like that and didn't change her at all. It's nice to see a woman not running to be with the star for once, and therefor gave the novel alot more realism for a change. I felt the scenes were set well, and nothing felt rushed (perhaps why it was so long) but in the end, it was a well written romance and i adored it.

To Seek a Master - Monica Belle (*)

Genre; Erotica
Release Date - Rerelease- 11th April 2013
Synopsis
Beautiful but shy Laura works for a powerful company, where it seems that every man harbors hidden desires for her. But if only, she thinks with shame, they could guess at her own torrid fantasies about them. Her subtle provocations are not going unnoticed or unappreciated—in fact, they are taking her into dangerous territory with several men. But the real object of her desire is "The Devil." A masterful and arrogant figure, he both terrifies and thrills her with his emails. He is a man intent on becoming her complete master, a man she would have to serve in ways that make her head spin. But isn't that what she always wanted

Review
Having previously read shorter black lace novels, i was excited to read another one, having only delved into short stories i thought this would give me more chance to indulge in a story line. I found this book was very slow starting but i had seen in other reviews that this was case. It tells the story of Laura, who spends her life reading on the train (old fashioned smut) and indulging in fantasies, but this all changes with one email from "the controller" who has spied her and takes a chance, with that we step into the world of "the controllers.  I found this book for me as a reader, a bit lack lustre, whilst it had all the elements to make it a very sexy story, i just couldnt quite enjoy it. I felt some of the language used was a bit silly for example, bouncy bottom *snigger* Now, i can read smut without a giggle but i couldnt with this, now i no black lace is an older erotica brand, and so i feel this could be targeted at someone who is slowly joining erotica. However, i feel i have read enough to give a constructive view, i hate giving anything a bad review, but for me - it just didn't work, which is a shame.

This is a love story - Jessica Thompson.

Genre;Chick Lit
Release date; Feb 2nd 2012
Synopsis
This is a love story.

Boy meets girl and girl falls for boy - that much is true.

But when Sienna meets Nick it's not the way it happens in love stories. It's because of a squirrel on water skis...

She sees Nick's dangerous brown eyes and thinks,

Don't.

Fall.

Into.

Them.

Who will be there to catch Siena when she falls? She is so fragile. She has so many secrets, and he is not that serious.

Funny and sad, this is the story of two people destined never to come together in the great love affair they crave more than anything else

Review
This is ultimately a love story, not in the full on "omg i am in love" love story but one of true friendship, real life and proper relationships.  It was written well, and i felt a real bond between the characters, not just a fleeting meeting and falling in love. I felt whilst it was long and at time i found myself impatient i felt it was true and that was lovely.  So Sienna and Nick meet over a water skiing squirrel, and over time, they learn so much about each other, throw in a homeless guy (who i adored, i even shed a tear) and Sienna's Dad, a bunch of unsuitable partners and this is the result. A slow paced beautifully written story.

Book 1 in The Epicurean series, A Taste of You will leave you ravenous for more of Cat and William’s story!

Review
I bloody loved this, a good erotica is right up my street. Since the 50 shades hype there has being a million and one books off the back of it, and i have had the pleasure of reading many of those. A taste of you sets its self apart by throwing food into the mix. Well, i love food, so this seemed the perfect mix. Step up Cat the food photographer, who bumps into a mysterious stormy eyed stranger one dark evening. Firstly, let me take a minute to mention the description in this book, from the food she is photographer to the description of Williams eyes, its beautiful. Anyway, back on to the story, whilst it does try to differentiate itself from other books in the genre, there is huge similiarities, a sexy billionare who owns everything in town, conflicting issues and the characters just cannot cope...um im looking at you gideon cross, & the many other males who have passed through my kindle.  Non the less, this does not let it down, in fact its nice that the format is there, its annoying, yes, but come on - we know what to expect. I was hooked, and in all honesty this is one of the better erotica i have read, and i am already to hear more from stormy eyes.

Love Rehab: A Novel in Twelve Steps by Jo Piazza (*)

Genre - Chick Lit
Release Date - June 4th
Synopsis
For anyone who has ever overdosed on love—or planned the wedding before the second date—Jo Piazza’s dazzling debut novel is a must-read

Cyber-stalking, drive-bys, drunken text messaging, creating fake email accounts—you’re gonna have to face it, you’re addicted to love.
Sophie isn’t dealing with her breakup well. Dumped by her boyfriend, Eric, for his sexting, D-cupped, young Floozy McSecretary, Sophie leaves Manhattan and lands back in her hometown, crushed and pajama-clad, blaming herself and begging her ex for a second chance.
But when her best friend, Annie, gets in trouble for driving drunk and is forced to go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, something clicks in Sophie’s strung-out mind. Women need love rehab, she realizes, to help fix the craziness that comes along with falling for someone.
If you start it, they will come. When she opens up her home to the obsessed and lovelorn, Sophie finds a way to help women out there who have overdosed on the wrong men—and she saves herself in the process.
Love is a drug and the only things that can save us are the steps, rules, and one another. Step one: Admit you have a problem, and keep the hell away from Facebook.

Review

I love a good chick lit, i love a good relationship break down, crazy woman, obsessive drunk dialing chick lit. There, i said it. This is a wonderful novel, well written & humours. Love Rehab tells the story of Sophie, who is struggling to deal with the breakdown of her relationship. Stumbling upon an AA meeting, Sophie takes the concepts and applies them to her life, introducing Love Rehab. Love Rehab takes those women, who when falling apart and brings them all together, through the support and love of those facing the same situations learn to deal with the breakdown.

The characters are well written each with a completely unique nature of their own. I found myself laughing out loud to some of the antics of these women, whilst i havent experienced these feelings myself, i could imagine myself in their shoes and adapting the same behaviour.  I felt a whirlwind of emotions and was rooting for all the women all the way through (not that they needed my support) This is definately a book i would purchase and reccomend to a girl friend, or read by a pool, cocktail in hand reflecting on life.

"If you love it, file it away under "things i love". If it's required at a later date, you'll know exactly where it i-i-i-is"

A control freak looks for love. (Women who leave wet teaspoons in sugar bowls need not apply).
"I haven't woken up with a cup of tea by the bed for seven years. It seems such a small thing but it's one of a thousand things I miss about having someone around to take care of me. I have spent my entire adult life getting things the way I want them and all I want now is someone to give it all up for." Jon Richardson
Is your filing faultless? Your CDs, apostrophes, cutlery all in the right places? Can you eat a biscuit in the correct way? Then Jon Richardson (single for seven years and counting) could be your ideal man.
Living alone in a one bedroom flat in Swindon, 27 year old Jon has had far too much time on his hands to think. In fact to obsess. About almost everything. Jon's obssessive compulsive personality disorder has seen him arrange the coins in his pockets in ascending size and colour code his bookshelves. It takes him less than 90 seconds to locate a receipt for a pair of shoes he bought in 1997. Over to the filing cabinet and R for receipts, S for shoes.
But Jon doesn't want to be like this, in fact he would quite like to share his life with someone. But who could that someone be? Someone like himself, a quarrelsome perfectionist only with breasts and less body hair? Absolutely not. But who exactly is Jon looking for and where will he find her? Faced with a loveless future filled with his own peculiar quirks and perfectionism, Jon sets about his search for The One. The question is, will he mind her keeping the knives to the left of the forks in the cutlery drawer or organising the CDs by genre and not alphabetically?

The Ice Cream Girls - Dorothy Koomson

Genre; Chick Lit/Drama
Synopsis
As teenagers Poppy Carlisle and Serena Gorringe were the only witnesses to a tragic event. Amid heated public debate, the two seemingly glamorous teens were dubbed ‘The Ice Cream Girls’ by the press and were dealt with by the courts.

Years later, having led very different lives, Poppy is keen to set the record straight about what really happened, while married mother-of-two Serena wants no one in her present to find out about her past. But some secrets will not stay buried – and if theirs is revealed, everything will become a living hell all over again...

Review
I knew as soon as i heard this was been made into a tv drama i had to read the book first, otherwise i would never read it. I am grateful for this push because the book is great. The characters are well written (i would of love to imagined my own but as i had already seen the first episodes my imagery was ruined) This tells the story of two women who once were involved in a tragic event and ultimately their lives ended up very differently. The book is fast paced, and switches from present day to the past quite fluidly and easily.  It contains alot of drama and twists and turns right up until the end. If you have seen the drama, i still urge you to read the book as their is some key significant differences between the two, and besides, the book is always better.

Fire - Heather James, Feature.

Hi all! Today i am sharing an excerpt from a new author, all the details are below if you decide to pick up a copy. Afternoonbookery will have a full review in the coming weeks plus an author interview, so if you have any questions, let me know! :)

Excerpt
Fire rose high into the trees on either side of me, closing in much faster than I'd anticipated. The air was thick with heat and smoke. I had to keep moving, fast. My heart hammered against my chest, keeping time with my feet as they pounded across the uneven ground. Above me, both suns hung high in the air, shining down mercilessly and adding more heat to that of the blaze.
I heard, rather than saw, the ball of flames whizzing through the air behind me, branches crackling to dust as it went. Moving on instinct, I threw myself to the ground, feeling the gritted earth graze my already filthy face and arms.

Only one thought ran through my mind: they were getting closer.

I pushed myself to my feet and set off again, faster than before. As I ran, I pushed a loose strand of hair - as red as the inferno surrounding me - away from my face. It had fallen out of its tie hours ago, but I hadn't stopped for long enough to fix it.

The flames kept coming, attacking me from both sides so that I had to duck and weave as I went. As I darted right, my feet stumbled on the uneven terrain. I couldn't keep this up for much longer; I needed to stand and fight.

"Come on then. I'm ready for you," I whispered to myself as I came to a stop. I wheeled around just in time to see a cloaked figure emerge from the trees to my left. The cloak gleamed with glittering red swirls that made it look as though it were aflame.

Where there should have been a face, I saw nothing but darkness.

Slowly, the figure raised his hands out towards me, toying with me; he thought I was beat. Flames sprung up at his fingertips and danced across his hands, gradually increasing in intensity.

But he was being complacent. He was nowhere close to winning this fight. While he put on his pyrotechnics show, my own fingertips burst into flames, burning faster and fiercer. Before he realised what was happening, I cast my hands out in front of me, sending a ball of fire straight at his chest. Thrown back by the force of the hit, he lay on the ground, motionless.

One down, two to go.

The flare receded from my fingers but the tingling sensation lingered; I was ready to attack as soon as I needed. Bending over the unconscious figure I pulled a shining silver ring from the index finger of his left hand. Shoving it into my pocket I set off again, but this time I headed left, in the direction the cloaked figure had emerged from.

I'd had enough of being hunted.

Keeper of the light - Diane Chamberlain

Genre - Chick Lit/ Womens
Synopsis
Dr. Olivia Simon is in the middle of treating a gunshot victim while on duty Christmas night when she realizes that the patient is Annie O'Neill, the woman with whom her husband, Paul, is in love. Despite Olivia's best efforts to save her, Annie dies in surgery. For Olivia, Paul and Annie's husband, Alec, life will never be the same.

Review
As you may know already, Diane Chamberlain is hands down one of my favourite authors of late, i find all her novels gripping, well written & leaving me guessing to the end. This was no different, i had no idea where it was going up the very end of the book. This tells the story of four main characters and how their inter twined life aall changes in one night, i feel this is not too heavy but it feels like the history amongst the characters is key. This follows a similair format as alot of Dianes book, starts with the diaster and works up to what happened ect. I was hooked and i am surprised it took me so long to delve in. This is the first in the kiss river series.

Rating ; 8/10
