AN INNOCENT GAME. A SHOCKING CRIME. A COMMUNITY FULL OF SECRETS.
Mapledon, 1989
Two little girls were out playing a game of dares. Only one returned home. The ten-year-old told police what she saw: village loner Bill ‘Creepy’ Cawley dragged her friend into his truck and disappeared. No body was found, but her testimony sent Cawley to prison for murder. An open and shut case, the right man behind bars. The village could sleep safe once again.
Now…
Anna thought she had left Mapledon and her nightmares behind but a distraught phone call brings her back to face her past. 30 years ago, someone lied. 30 years ago, the man convicted wasn’t the only guilty party. Now he’s out of prison and looking for revenge. The question is, who will he start with?

Review
This is my second read by the author and i enjoyed it immensely, so much so i was so engrossed i burnt my leftover pizza i was reheating. It was deep, dark and full of secrets. I like a read that keeps you in the dark until the end, not one where you get half way through and already know all the outcomes and possible options.
In Mapledon two girls were playing a game of knock knock ginger - only one of them came home and when she says that she saw Creepy Cawley drive away with her then its a clear cut case of murder and they only ever have the one suspect.
Now though - "Creepy Cawley" is out of Prison and clearly he is after justice, especially with the fact he is nailing body parts to villagers doors (which explains why i got a dolls head in the post with this book.....terrifying, but brilliant marketing)
Mapledone is a close knit community, but not in a particually nice sense, if you are an outsider, you are an outsider - they are not very inclusive and it almost reminds me of "for the greater good" from Hot Fuzz. It was a community full of secrets and one day they are going to all come tumbling out.
We follow Lizzie and Anna as they both return to the place they "escaped" to find answers as to what is actually happening. It was a great read to tackle towards the end of this decade, and i will be picking up more from this author because she writes thrillers that are complicated, deep, creepy and twisted. Better than your average thriller because there is so much substance behind it.
